Steve Marriell has scheduled nighttime operations at SCA for thirty seven years. He started with a display case on the wall of the driver's room and magnetic labels arranged in rows, one row per driver. He moved the labels by hand until the week made sense. Then he drove to the Delaware office and did it again.
Other sites planned from paper worksheets and zip codes. A zip code is not a route. A driver could start at the north end and finish at the south end, burning miles and fuel that nobody planned.
Vinnie Granby plotted stops one address at a time in a mapping app and worked out the order himself.
None of these people were doing the job badly. They were doing a job the tools could not do.
